Federal Government Prepared to Dispatch Numerous Law Enforcement to San Francisco

The White House was preparing on Wednesday to send numerous of government officers to the Bay Area region for a large-scale crackdown on immigration, triggering condemnation from local politicians.

Details of the Operation

Information of the mission were still emerging, but it will allegedly feature more than 100 government officers, as reported. The personnel are reportedly set to begin occupying the military installation in the East Bay, across the bay from San Francisco. It was not confirmed whether national guard troops would also be involved.

Political Response

The operation is the result of months of warnings by the president to take action against the progressive municipality. Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the decision, describing it as “straight from the dictator’s handbook”.

“He sends out masked men, he deploys border agents, he deploys ICE, he creates worry and terror in the population so that he can lay claim for addressing that by dispatching the military forces,” he declared. “This is no different than the arsonist putting out the inferno.”

Municipal Readiness

San Francisco is the most recent large urban area focused on by the administration's initiative of widespread apprehensions. The deployment is likely to cause a confrontation between the White House and municipal authorities who have vowed to stop militarized immigration enforcement in the city.

San Franciscans have been gearing up for weeks for Trump to carry out frequent statements to send troops to the city. At a Wednesday public announcement, San Francisco’s city leader emphasized that the city was equipped.

“During this period, we have been anticipating the possibility of a potential government operation in our city,” stated the official, adding that he had taken further executive actions on Wednesday to “enhance the city’s protection of our immigrant communities, and make certain our offices are coordinated ahead of any federal deployment.”

Constitutional Framework

Despite legal challenges to operations in a number of cities, including Illinois, Oregon and LA, Trump has declared “absolute authority” to dispatch the military forces in cities, pointing to the federal statute which enables presidents limited power to dispatch personnel on US soil.

Local Preparation

Newsom – who once held office as San Francisco’s city leader – had pledged to intervene “right away” to a mission in the city. “The idea that the national administration can dispatch personnel into our cities with no legitimate cause grounded in reality, no monitoring, no answerability, no consideration of regional control – it represents an infringement on the rule of law,” he said on Wednesday.

Public associations, including social justice nonprofits formed in the initial federal leadership, have prepped to rapidly assemble a mass rally in the city, as well as vigils at local libraries.

Community Consequences

In San Francisco’s Mission district, a predominantly Latino community, local representative stated to media last week she and her residents had been preparing for this time. “The point that people stop going to work, when people of color cannot move about freely without the apprehension of national personnel racially profiling and apprehending them, the time when families keep children home, grow too frightened to go to the grocery store or doctor,” she said. “The readiness efforts in the Mission is basically a halt the extent of which we have not experienced since the health crisis.”

State Troops Condition

About several hundred out of four thousand regional state soldiers remain federalized under an command from Trump. Roughly 200 of them had been transferred to the Pacific Northwest, where they were waiting in limbo during a court case over their deployment.

This time, Newsom said he had called the local soldiers under his authority to manage distribution centers during the federal closure.
