‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?

Light therapy is clearly enjoying a wave of attention. Consumers can purchase light-emitting tools designed to address complexion problems and aging signs as well as muscle pain and periodontal issues, the latest being an oral care tool outfitted with miniature red light sources, marketed by the company as “a major advance in at-home oral care.” Worldwide, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. As claimed by enthusiasts, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, enhancing collagen production, easing muscle tension, alleviating inflammatory responses and chronic health conditions as well as supporting brain health.

“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” observes Paul Chazot, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Naturally, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, as well, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. It works on the immune system within cells, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” says a dermatology expert. “Substantial research supports light therapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “tend to be a bit more superficial.”

Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance

The side-effects of UVB exposure, such as burning or tanning, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – that reduces potential hazards. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, thus exposure is controlled,” says Ho. Essentially, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – unlike in tanning salons, where oversight might be limited, and emission spectra aren’t confirmed.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Red and blue LEDs, he says, “aren’t typically employed clinically, though they might benefit some issues.” Red light devices, some suggest, improve circulatory function, oxygen utilization and dermal rejuvenation, and promote collagen synthesis – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “Research exists,” comments the expert. “But it’s not conclusive.” In any case, amid the sea of devices now available, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, how close the lights should be to the skin, the risk-benefit ratio. Numerous concerns persist.”

Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives

One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – although, explains the specialist, “it’s commonly used in cosmetic clinics.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he says, however for consumer products, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. If it’s not medically certified, the regulation is a bit grey.”

Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes

At the same time, in innovative scientific domains, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he says. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that it’s too good to be true. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.

The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, though twenty years earlier, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he says. “I was pretty sceptical. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, which most thought had no biological effect.”

The advantage it possessed, however, was that it travelled through water easily, allowing substantial bodily penetration.

Mitochondrial Impact and Cognitive Support

Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, producing fuel for biological processes. “Every cell in your body has mitochondria, including the brain,” says Chazot, who prioritized neurological investigations. “Studies demonstrate enhanced cerebral circulation with light treatment, which is consistently beneficial.”

With specific frequency application, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In low doses this substance, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”

These processes show potential for neurological conditions: antioxidant, swelling control, and cellular cleanup – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.
