Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series against India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a surprise inclusion.
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international side after managing only a single run in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a best innings of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.
The batsman has played 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
There have been indications of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia look for a fix to their top-order woes.
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
