Belgian police have taken into custody three suspects accused of conspiring to carry out an attack on the country's PM, Bart de Wever.
Prosecutors labeled the reported plan as a "jihadist-inspired terrorist attack" targeting the premier and additional politicians.
During searches conducted in Antwerp's Deurne district, in proximity to the PM's personal dwelling, officials discovered a potential homemade bomb and indications that the accused were planning to use a drone.
While the intended targets of the strike were not disclosed by name by the prosecutor's office, Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot stated that the prime minister was included in the targets.
"Information of a intended assault targeting PM Bart de Wever is profoundly disturbing," the deputy prime minister stated in a message on online platforms on the investigation day.
"It emphasizes that we are facing a very real terrorist threat and that we have to remain vigilant," he concluded.
The three suspects detained on allegations of attempted terrorist murder and engagement in the operations of a terrorist group all are based in the Antwerp region, according to the federal prosecutors. They were born in the early 2000s.
By late Thursday, one suspect was let go, while the remaining two were undergoing questioning and likely to appear in court on the next day.
Federal prosecutors stated that the accused were detained after a magistrate ordered searches of their dwellings in the urban area by police officers supported by explosives-trained dogs.
Throughout these investigations that they located a object which appeared to be an IED, lead prosecutor Ann Fransen announced at a news conference on Thursday.
Raids also uncovered a container of metal spheres and a three-dimensional printer, with evidence suggesting drone-based payload delivery, she noted.
The prosecutor disclosed that there had been 80 terrorism investigations opened in the nation in the current year - surpassing the total number of cases in last year.
Earlier this year, five suspects were sentenced for a previous year's plan to target Belgium's leader while he was holding the position of the city's chief executive.
